When a team jumps from one state classification to the next highest, there is usually a learning curve that has to be faced. When a team comes down a classification, they usually compete very well. Anna faced North Lamar to open their district play this Tuesday and fell to a very good team. North Lamar was a 4A team last year and still compete against larger schools in non district play.
Logan Parsons and Cody Sellers managed the only two Coyote hits in the game, as Anna fell 0-13 in just five innings. Brad Gee took the loss for Anna, whose record fell to 4-11 on the season. "We are a very young team; sometimes starting as many as two freshmen and three sophomores," said Kraig Johnson, Anna Head Baseball Coach. "The biggest improvement that we have made during the first half of the season is getting adjusted to the level of play that is required for a varsity game. There is a huge difference between sub-varsity and varsity baseball. We have played a very tough schedule but the kids have continued to play hard to improve and get ready for district play." On Friday, as students wrapped up their spring break, the Coyotes traveled to Celina for a double header. In the first game, the Coyotes were shut out 0-9. Anna managed just three hits, one each by Cory Meaders, Ryan Hayes, and Zakk Perez. Celina was led at the plate by Charley Waldrep who was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Greg O'Bier took the loss for Anna. Celina beat Anna 6-0 in game two on Friday to sweep the doubleheader. Lloyd Jacobs took the loss for the Coyotes giving up four first inning runs on three hits. Anna was led at the plate by Ryan Hayes who was 2-for-2 and Austin Bailey who was 1-for-2 with a double. The Coyotes will continue district play this week and continue to try to improve their game according to Johnson. "We have scouted those teams [Van Alstyne and Paris] a little bit but we really spend most of our time just trying to improve on the things that we do and the things that we feel like we need to do better to give us a chance to win," Coach Johnson said. "Baseball is a game where if you play solid defense and put the bat on the ball, then you are going to have a chance to win. So, we just concentrate on the things that we can control and not worry about anything else." Anna will travel to Van Alstyne on Friday and host Paris on Tuesday. |
